Getting hands on.
In the spring of 2024, we added a CNC knife cutter table to our shop. The intention was simple, get hands on. We wanted to explore new materials and processes that would reduce the product develpment timeline and allows us to shorten the gap between the conception of the idea and the execution.
What's PET?
PET Felt is an innovative material made from recycled PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles, combining sustainability with design versatility. Its durable yet soft texture is perfect for a wide range of applications. The material can be precisely cut with a CNC knife cutter and folded like origami, enabling intricate and creative designs. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, PET Felt also offers excellent acoustic properties, making it a smart choice for functional, design-focused projects.
What's the goal.
The evolution of processes like injection molding, formed plywood, sheet metal bending, and additive manufacturing has redefined design and production. Injection molding revolutionized mass production by enabling quick, complex plastic forms, while formed plywood, popularized by the Eames in the 1940s, allowed for lightweight, curved designs that fueled modernist aesthetics. Sheet metal bending streamlined production in industries like automotive and aerospace, and additive manufacturing (3D printing) introduced new levels of customization and efficiency. Each breakthrough pushed the limits of what was possible, setting the stage for future innovations in design and materials.
